PROJECTS > Terrain

Terrain pairs photographs that describe the beauty of the land, and its terrain, of two small organic farms, one in Gardners, Pennsylvania and the other in Montegiovi, Italy. The photographs of Pennsylvania tell a story of artist Priscilla Briggs’s father and his farm over the passage of seasons and years. It is a story of love. Another narrative describes the olive harvest at Poderi Borselli, a family farm that produces award-winning olive oil and wine and is a community partner with the La Baldi artist residency in the village of Montegiovi. Small farms are hard, but satisfying, work. The beauty of the land that is cultivated with care, is meant to be in contrast with what we know of large industrial farms that focus on profits over concern for the environment, growing nutritious food, and community well-being.

Both farms are also the subject of accompanying artist zines. An Unconventional Farmer focuses on Briggs’s father’s farm as a model for organic farming. Case Studies in Sustainability: Poderi Borselli is the premiere issue in of a series of zines that will each focus on a different farm and its approach to sustainability.
